human history

    Canoe, model (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Vaka ama. A model of a single hull outrigger canoe mounted to a flat wooden base which is unevenly rectangular in shape. This vaka ama is designed for a single occupant. All components of this vaka ama are carved from wood, brown in colour, and glued together. Attached to cover the tino vaka is a carved puke (combined prow and stern cover component). A small seat is inserted in the interior of the tino vaka.

Decorative incised lines and geometric patterns are applied to the surface of the wooden puke. Two wooden tau toko (crossbooms) extend out from the tino vaka with two connecting wooden supports between them. Three tutuki (wooden stakes) are tied to the ends of each of these tau toko and connect to a hama (outrigger) of lightweight wood. One fohe (paddle) is placed with the vaka ama. The model vaka ama is highly varnished and glossy in surface treatment.
