Gatu were most commonly made by men in Uvea mo Futuna. It is made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree which has been stripped, beaten and patched together using cassava tubers to create a light brown flat textile . This is then dyed and rubbed with a natural pigment made from togo (mangrove) or kele'uli (clay), and then painted with a black dye made from tuitui (candlenut) soot. This gatu looks to have been cut from a larger piece. It has a thick black border and in the middle are intricate geometric designs which have been painted brown and black. This gatu is very thin in depth and fragile to touch, it shows signs of wear and tear.WāhiFutuna/Wallis and FutunaAccession Number1932.353Rā Tāpiringa1932Tohu Tuakiri Kē18101.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Gatu, 1932.353, 18101.1, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1932.353, 18101.1Takenga ā-AhureaFutunanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiFutuna/Wallis and FutunaRāPre 1932Tikanga WaihangaTapaWaitohu/māka18101.1 pres (handwritten)Pāohobark clothbark clothHuinga KaupapaBark cloth/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūBark ClothTextileworking T&ETools & EquipmentWhakahounga o Mua26 Nov 2019 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Calls in Solomon Islands for national reconciliation to be deferred Radio New Zealand Solomons theatre leader wins awards for anti-violence work Radio New Zealand DEATH.
