This is a carved anave made of wood. The anave is a light brown colour with a smooth varnished surface. The handle is cylindrical in shape and undecorated, as is the rest of the anave. The base of the handle is lined with a few thin cracks and a large chip. The handle flares to a collar of triangular nifo (teeth). There are six nifo in total with three on each side of the club. All the nifo are in tact and all have a blunt point. The collar then widens to a flat oval shaped blade. Anave are thought to have been introduced to Samoa and used instead for entertainment purposes as opposed to being used as a foe (paddle) or 'au'upega (weapon of war).WāhiSamoa/PacificAccession Number1930.474Rā Tāpiringa1930Tohu Tuakiri Kē13894.6 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete club, 1930.474, 13894.6, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1930.474, 13894.6Takenga ā-AhureaSamoanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiSamoa/PacificTikanga WaihangacarvedWaitohu/māka13894.6 / PRES / SAMOA (handwritten)Pāohowood/plant materialRaraunga Ine10350mm140mm30mmHuinga KaupapaWarriors/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūClubArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua14 Sep 2023 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
