This is a hand held weapon made from the following materials: kanni (coconut palm wood), noko (coconut midrib), irauea (cordage of human hair), kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) and wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth). A length has been cut from kanni. It has been carved and filed into a cylindrical form with a circular cross-section at its base. It has been tapered to portray a point from the top of the reeree. A small section of the base has been left exposed for the purpose of a handle. Lengths of the noko in two different sizes line the barbed length of the reeree. Each pair of noko features a continuous inlay of wii ni bakoa. Each wii ni bakoa shows a drilled circular perforation through its centre where the kora has been inserted. This is for the purpose of lashing and securing both the noko and wii ni bakoa to the length of the blade. Two sections of the blade beneath the lashing has been covered with a coil of the irauea. The end of the noko near the point has been bound off with a small coil of the nimwaerere (cordage of both human hair and coconut sennit fibres). Te kora has become loose over the blade and some wii ni bakoa have come undone in the process.WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1925.146Rā Tāpiringa1925Tohu Tuakiri Kē14180 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te reeree, 1925.146, 14180, Photographed by Daan Hoffmann,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1925.146, 14180Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaIsaacsKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1925Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled woven lashed inlay [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka14180 (handwritten)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[coconut wood]/wood/plant materialhuman hair/hair/animal materialcoconut leaf midrib/coconut leaf/leaf (plant material)/plant materialshark/fish/tooth/boneRaraunga Ine755mm40mmHuinga KaupapaWarfare/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūSwordArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua03 Jan 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
