This is a model vaka. It ahs been made entirely from a light brown wood material that is hard in texture and slightly heavy in weight. There is no hama (outrigger) attached, only the remains of two tautoko (crossbooms). The main body of the vaka is made up of two components: the tino vaka (hull) and a prowl cover that portrays both the puke (bow and stern) and oa (port and starboard) in one piece. The tino vaka features a curved, convex base and tapers into two points. Its interior shows hafted markings and its exterior is smooth. The prowl cover has been decorated with carved designs that show triangular linear markings that repeat themselves along the exterior. 8 perforations have been made through both the tino vaka and prowl cover along the edges that meet. This is for the purpose of inserting pulu (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) for lashing both components together to form the main body of the vaka. The bow of the vaka shows a raised central ridge that has been carved to portray a serrated finish in contrast to the central ridge of the stern end. 6 perforations feature across the opening edges on either side for the purpose of lashing tautoko. The splash back at the bow end shows a paneled design with cross-hatched carvings where as the splash back on the stern end is square in finish with square cross-hatching across the surface. Fua pule (cowrie shells) have been threaded onto pulu and then attached along the join line between the tino vaka and prowl cover for decoration.Wāhi[Niue]/PacificAccession Number1925.146Rā Tāpiringa1925Tohu Tuakiri Kē14341 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Vaka, 1925.146, 14341, Photographed by Richard Ng, digital,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1925.146, 14341Takenga ā-Ahurea[Niuean]KohingaIsaacsKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)Wāhi[Niue]/PacificRāPre 1925Tikanga Waihangacarved handmadePāoho[mangrove]/hardwood/wood/plant material/AAT Materialssennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibrecowrie shell/seashell/shellRaraunga Ine810mm210mm110mmTaumata whakarōpūModelDocumentary ArtefactsCommunication Artefacts ModelOther DocumentsDocumentary Artifacts08 Communication ArtifactsWhakahounga o Mua24 Sep 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
