Kali are wooden pillows or headrests that are placed under the head or nape of the neck whilst sleeping or lying down. There are different types of kali that vary in construction as well as the materials used. This is a Kali Toloni, which is carved from toa wood (iron wood) and a rich brown in colour. It is made up of three different parts, the headrest bar as well as the two legs. The headrest itself is cylindrical in shape, the legs are arched in an inverted U shape with a V indentation at the top to accommodate for the cylindrical headrest to sit upon. It is further secured into place with plaited pulu'i niu (coconut husk).WāhiTonga/PacificRā TāpiringaUnknownTohu Tuakiri Kē14719 (ethnology)L20 (Edge-Partington)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete headrest, 14719, L20, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 14719; L20Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKohingaT W Leys MemorialKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificTikanga WaihangacarvedWaitohu/mākaL20/14719 Tonga (label) 14719 (handwritten)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)[mangrove]/hardwood/wood/plant material/AAT Materialssennit/cord (fiber product)Raraunga Ine508 x 203.2 x 165.1mm195mm505mm167mmHuinga KaupapaMen/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -woodworkTaumata whakarōpūHeadrestBedding02 Furnishings HeadrestBeddingFurnishingsWhakahounga o Mua20 Aug 2021 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
