This is a hand held weapon. It has been cut, carved and filed from a length of wood that portrays both a short handle and blade in one component. The exposed area at the base of the length that shows no attachments is for the purpose of a handle. The end of its length has been filed into a convex form. Its entire length shows some width with a short depth. Both sides of the length show a raised ridge that runs down the centre of the length of wood. After the section of the handle, a series of drilled perforations line the edge of the blade length on both sides. Additionally a furrow has been carved out into the edges of the blade length. Wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth) has been individually inlayed along both furrows and secured into place with the kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres). Some wii ni bakoa are missing from the series where only perforations remain. The top of the blade tapers to form a small point.WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRā Tāpiringa1877Tohu Tuakiri Kē11626 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te reeree, 11626, Photographed by Jennifer Carol, digital,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 11626Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1877Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled woven lashed inlay [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka11626 E (ethnology number)Pāohowood/plant materialsennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreshark/fish/tooth/boneRaraunga Ine490mm650mmHuinga KaupapaWarfare/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūSwordArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua05 Dec 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
