A ceremonial whale's tooth with a hole drilled at its tip and base areas for suspension. An iyau (treasure) of high cultural value to Fijians. Sourced from a tovuto (sperm whale), the tabua is shaped like a horn and ovoid in cross section. The outer surface of the tabua is smoothed and highly polished and an ivory colour. Several surface scratches and nicks on the tabua's surface. Three holes drilled around the rim of the base, and one hole drilled at the tip of the tabua. The hollow inner cavity of the tabua is conical in shape and dark brown in colour. A suspension cord of brown plant fibre, double twisted, is knotted and tied to a drilled hole at the base and tip ends of the tabua. The cord is somewhat fragile and brittle.WāhiFijiRā Tāpiringa1886Tohu Tuakiri Kē11752 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Tabua, 11752, Photographed by Jennifer Carol, digital, 01… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 11752Takenga ā-AhureaFijianKaiwaihanga Matua unknown (Maker)WāhiFijiRāPre 1886Tikanga Waihangadrilled braided ground polishedWaitohu/māka11752 E (handwritten)Pāohowhale/sea mammal/mammal/tooth/bonepandanus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreRaraunga Ine151mm117mm55mmTaumata whakarōpūCeremonial ArtefactsCommunication ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua21 Sep 2018 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Fiji moves to further regulate tabua exports Radio New Zealand Repatriation of Tabua back to Fiji 'a rare event' Radio New Zealand NZ to repatriate more than 100 Fijian heirlooms Radio New Zealand Pacific Islanders rugby coach resigns citing personal reasons Radio New Zealand Fiji Rugby Union names former Wallaby to take national side through to World Cup Radio New Zealand Mea e whai hononga ai E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
