    1998.60.321 Castle 473

To act as an accompaniment to the Stanesby tenor recorder in their concerts, Zillah Castle commissioned this hand-copied reproduction from the Auckland instrument maker Paul Whinray.

Paul Whinray first met the Castles after a talk he had given to the Wellington Early Music Union in 1979.

Zillah had taken an immediate liking to his rebellious character and invited him to see and measure the Stanesby. This instrument from early in Whinray’s career, was made from those measurements.
