  • Other Name

    Model canoe (English)

  • Description

Vaka akaraanga. Model canoe. Single hull. The components for this single hull vaka akaraanga is carved from a light weight wood. The hull is comprised of three wooden parts ‘sewn’ or lashed together with kapu akari (coconut sennit). The sides of the hull consist of flat segments of wooden plank connected together in the same method with kapu akari.

At each end of the vaka the body narrows into a point, with carved wooden covers fitted at the prow and stern, the cover for the latter being chipped at its furthest point. Each of these segments have a carved platform feature incorporated into the design. Thin wooden twigs are lashed cross the width of the hull for the strats as well as the extended frame for the ama (although no ama is present).
