Ike are used in the process of making ngatu (bark cloth). Strips of the inner paper mulberry are soaked overnight and then beaten with an ike on a board to flatten and stretch the strips into bigger and thinner sections. These are then pasted with other sections to make up a completed ngatu. This ike is carved from one block of wood, most likely toa wood as it is heavy and can withstand the labour intensive beating. The handle is cylindrical in shape, tapering out towards the base. The beater itself is long and square in shape with four sides which are all used in the beating process.WāhiTonga/PacificRā TāpiringaUnknownTohu Tuakiri Kē35060 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete beater, 35060, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 35060Takenga ā-AhureaTonganWāhiTonga/PacificRāUnknownTikanga Waihangacarved polishedWaitohu/māka35060 "Gilbert Islands Club" (handwritten)Pāohowood/plant material[mangrove]/hardwood/wood/plant material/AAT MaterialsRaraunga Ine287 x 63 x 68mm284mm65mm67mmHuinga KaupapaBark cloth/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūBeater, TapaTextileworking T&ETools & EquipmentWhakahounga o Mua28 Mar 2024 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
