    Stone pounder (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

    Reru. Pounder. Carved from single piece of flowstone or stalactite (keho or morevai). Used for pounding/mashing food or ingredients for producing dyes. Top of pounder expanded laterally into a transverse bar. One side of the grip is broken off. Conical in overall shape. Dark tan in colour. Attributed to Mangaia, Cook Islands. Gifted by T. F. Cheeseman in 1899.
