  • Kupu whakaahua

    Ruatangaeo. Hafted adze (adze missing). An intricately carved wooden haft. Square pedestal base and shape. Top of the haft carved out to accomodate the fitting of a toki (adze). Puru akari (braided coconut sennit) of a fine flat iri taki toru (3-ply braid) loosely lashed on to the top of the haft. Repeated triangular and 'K-motif' (unique to Mangaia) designs carved all over the wooden pedestal. The lashing is natural in colour. The wooden haft is stained dark.

    Loss of wood at one corner of the base. Cracks present at the top of the haft.
