    Screw gauge

trapezium-shaped steel gauge with long handle and circular hole. 19 holes graduating in size with four horizontal engraved lines in centre.

Many different gauges were used and invented by different manufacturers for many purposes before the metric system became more or less universal during the latter part of the 20th century. Some were common or logical, and others were not so, being peculiar to one manufacturer or area.
