Staking set, 88 punches, 15 stakes, circular base and cover

This is an older style of staking set. The original cover would have been glass, probably with a central knob for lifting it, and has been lost or broken. The present modern replacement is of plastic.

description: staking set on a circular wooden base; 88 steel punches inserted into circular holes in base, 15 stakes inserted into base, central steel anvil with circular platform, held in place with small metal rod attached to wooden base and inserted in bottom of anvil; clear plastic dome cover.

When a watch was dropped, the pivots of the balance staff (the axle of the oscillating balance wheel) usually broke, necessitating the fitting of a new staff. The old one was removed in a lathe by turning off the riveted part holding it in the balance. A new staff had to be made (or in more recent years purchased), and had to be riveted into the balance wheel. This required an accurate support to the work, and an accurate punch held centrally and vertically to rivet the new staff into place. A good set of varying sized and shaped punches such as in this set was a necessity. the stake which held the punches had varying sizes of holes in its base, but also accepted many other sizes and shapes of anvils for different tasks.
