A ngahau (bow) is one of the most basic weapons and hunting implements in Tonga, it is also known as a kaufana. This ngahau has been carved from one block or branch of wood, most probably the toa (ironwood) tree. The surface area is smooth and it is medium brown in colour, it is a straight bow which would have been used for long distance shooting. The pull string is missing but there are slight indentations at either end to secure the pull string to. Ngahau can be used as a weapon in warfare, as well as a hunting in both land and sea.WāhiTonga/PacificAccession Number1925.193Rā Tāpiringa28 Sep 1925Tohu Tuakiri Kē7118 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete bow, 1925.193, 7118, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1925.193, 7118Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificRāUnknownTikanga Waihangacarved polishedWaitohu/māka7118; TONGA; Pres; Sir G FowldsPāohounknown[mangrove]/hardwood/wood/plant material/AAT MaterialsRaraunga Ine2013mm32mm19mmHuinga KaupapaMen/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Warriors/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Fishing/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -woodworkTaumata whakarōpūBowArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua10 Dec 2020 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ B1 Ngahau Auckland Libraries Ngahau Hocken Collections - Uare Taoka o Hākena, University of Otago FAIRIEL SENDS (Evening Post, 26 February 1938) National Library of New Zealand NEW PIXIES (Evening Post, 12 October 1935) National Library of New Zealand FAIRIEL SENDS . . .
