Kiekie are waist ornaments which are worn by females in Tonga as part of their formal wear. They are also worn by school girls and boys in Tonga as part of their school uniform. Kiekie are traditionally made from natural materials which are sourced locally in Tonga or in villages. However, kiekie can be made from a combination of synthetic and natural materials, or entirely from synthetic material. This kiekie is an example of a fully synthetic kiekie. It is made entirely from the black tape from the inside of VHS tapes. The tape is made from flat rosettes which have been sewn together to form a waistband and then sewn downwards to create the kiekie strips. The rosettes are made by wrapping the tape around a nailed board, in a particular pattern to make the circular flat rosettes.WāhiAuckland/New ZealandAccession Number2004.78.30Rā Tāpiringa04 Aug 2004Tohu Tuakiri Kē56188 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Waist ornament, 2004.78.30, 56188, Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 2004.78.30, 56188Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiAuckland/New ZealandRāUnknownTikanga WaihangawovenWaitohu/māka56188 Tonga taovala 2004.78.30Pāohomagnetic tape/tapemagnetic tape/tapeWhakaahuatanga Ine1210 x 520mmRaraunga Ine1210mm520mm1585mm515mm6mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, WaistBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua08 Sep 2023 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Tongan traditional wear with a modern twist Radio New Zealand NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB.
