Sisi are waist ornaments which are worn on top of a ta'ovala (waist mat). These can be worn for special occasions and celebrations and are a part of ones dance attire for specific faiva. Sisi are usually made from all natural materials and scented flowers and plants are added for aesthetics as well as the fragrant qualities. This sisi is made from fau (hibiscus) fibre, the band is plaited with short red curled fau strips inserted and left to hang loose. Along the band, fa (pandanus keys) are attached with small pieces of fau fibre. Although now faded in colour, at the time of creation, it would have been a vibrant red and green in colour and had a sweet fragrant smell. Underneath the fa there are three rows of folded fau strips which make up the rest of the sisi. This particular sisi was worn by those from the Kolofo'ou village during their Laione lakalaka for the coronation of King George Tupou IV.WāhiNukualofa/Tonga/PacificAccession Number1976.73Rā Tāpiringa17 May 1976Tohu Tuakiri Kē47582 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete ornament, neck, 1976.73, 47582, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1976.73, 47582Takenga ā-AhureaTonganWāhiNukualofa/Tonga/PacificRāUnknownTikanga Waihangapolished wovenWaitohu/mākaTonga; 47582; Nukualofa "45582; Niuafo'ou; TONGA"Pāohohibiscus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibrepandanus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[hibiscus (fibre)]/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre/AAT Materialshibiscus/hardwood/wood/plant materialRaraunga Ine1200mm660mm160mm1356mm68mm13mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua31 Mar 2023 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Ornament, Neck Puke Ariki Ornaments, Neck Puke Ariki Ornament, Neck Puke Ariki Ornament, Neck Puke Ariki Ornament, Neck Puke Ariki Mea e whai hononga ai E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
