  • Kupu whakaahua

Porcelain, gold leaf under pigmented glaze.

Ono, one of only two female Japanese artists in the collection( Itoh Collection), spent many years experimenting to find a method of fixing gold leaf so that it remained in place underneath the glaze during its passage through the kiln firing process. She colours the transparent glaze to allow the gold leaf to show, and to give variation of surface effect.
