human history
  • Other Name

White Camellia with Group of Birds

  • Description

large deep porcelain bowl with Kutani enamels painted design. This features a camellia flower with a group of five birds in blues and yellows

Hasegawa’s palette of rich yellows, greens, blues and aubergine is characteristic of a distinctive type of seventeenth-century Japanese porcelain which was the model for numerous varieties of ware produced in the Kutani kilns in southern Ishikawa Prefecture during the nineteenth century. This gives rise to the name, ‘Old Kutani Ware’.

Hasegawa’s contribution to this legacy lies in his powerful sense of design, and in his boldly calligraphic approach to enamel painting. This is especially apparent in the execution of his depiction of the camellia.
