Donor, Brigadier Kenneth McCormick, enlisted with 2 NZEF as a Colonel and Acting Director Medical Services (ADMS) in January 1940. He was promoted to Brigadier and Director of Medical Services (DMS), October 1940. He returned to NZ in April 1943. The flag is marked "Q Curnahan RNVR", which implies the flag belonged (at least initially) to a member of the South African division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, which was South Africa's only real naval involvement at the beginning of WW2.
