  • Description

    Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf), laukie (soft pandanus) and fulu kaleva (kaleva feathers). Tuaaniu are braided to form the spine of the blade as well as the handle. The handle is cylindrical shape and is encased in lalaga (woven) laukie and green raffia. The blade is spade shaped and is made of tightly lashed tuaaniu. The tuaaniu is lashed using thin straps of beige colour kaumoe.

    Decorating the blade are two borders made of dyed laukie. One border is a green colour and the other is a black colour. The ili is also bordered with white fulu kaleva as another form of decoration. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili were used to keep cool in hot weather an often presented as gifts to visitors.
