He served in the battle of Ruapekapeka in the Bay of Islands and was present (and mentioned-in-despatches) at the Battle of Ruapekapeka . After serving with the regiment in Wellington and Wanganui, Dr. Philson resigned his commission in the army in 1850 to commence private practice in Auckland. He was appointed surgeon to the Auckland provincial hospital in 1858, which post he held for 25 years, and was also district coroner, and surgeon to Her Majesty's gaol.
