Taonga

  • Rārangi Mihi
Gift of Athol Attwood, collection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 2015.90.1
  • Kuputuhi e Wātea Tūmatanui ana

This planter was made by Harold Cedric Osborne in the 1930s. Osborne was known for his wood inlay work, and during the depression he made these concrete and stone planters as a way of earning income. This planter was acquired by the donor's parents, who lived next door to Osborne on Winstone Road, Mt Roskill, Auckland.

Two things make this planter stand out: one, the way in which this object relates to the Depression, and the ways in which people managed to survive, in this case by making inexpensive and everyday items; two, the strange beauty of the planter, in which prosaic materials of concrete and river stones are transformed into a powerful object, registering Osborne's skill as a craftsperson.
