head, figurine

human history
  • Kupu whakaahua

Figurine head. Mould made. Segmented, helmet shaped headdress with chin straps and what appear to be the base of ears (now broken off) projecting from the top sides of the head. The headdress crown shows a grid of rectangular segments (seven vertical divisions). The base is formed by a slightly curved band across the forehead of vertical segments with a raised segment as a centre feature. Three levels of chin strap frame the face (the lower part of one side missing).

The straps are segmented strips, each with a raised segment or button in a vertical row beneath the chin. Eyes lidded and rimmed. Nose end and mouth have abrasion damage. The back has a thick head support, probably the base of a stand. Broken at the neck under the chin strap. White pigment on the front and back.
