"A photograph of a woman with a moko in the Auckland Herald or Auckland Star Newspaper inspired the Wahine character jugs and plate. Cameron made the first fifty at Waitakere in 1953. Their crimson scarves became streaky because the colour had burned out during firing. The next batch, made at Henderson, had a second low-firing of onglaze red for the scarf."
