Neck ornament of porpoise teeth. It is made of two material components: wiin te kua kewe (porpoise teeth) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). A three-ply plaited cord makes up the neck band. The ends have been knotted to prevent the fibres from unravelling. Each strand of the plaited braid has been utilized to thread a single wiin te kua kewe and then intertwined to perceive a double layered look. The roots of the teeth are matte and a dark off-yellow colour, the exposed ends of the teeth are polished and off-white in colour. They are double layered along the neck band. Small perforations have been made with a shark toothed pump drill into the the roots of the teeth for te kora to be threaded through. This type of neck ornament can be worn by either men or women at any time.WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē22928 (ethnology)17 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ririko; 1936.295; 22928, 17; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 22928; 17Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangadrilled polished wovenWaitohu/māka22928; Beru; Gilbert Is; DEP.; MR & MRS.
