Shank. This is a component that would be used to complete a whole te matau (fish hook). It is made entirely from te kuano (phosphate). It has been ground into a length that is cylindrical in form. One end has been tapered. A drilled perforation has been made into the side. This would be for the purpose of inserting a line. The opposite end has been cut to show a circular cross-section. Three small furrows have been filed upon each side near the circular cross-section end. This would be for the purpose of attaching tabon te matau (point) with either te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) or thread. Its exterior is smooth in texture and hard in material. It is pale yellow in colour and dappled with opaque white lines.WāhiKiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē23537.3 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te rabatan te matau; 1936.295; 23537.3; Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 23537.3Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiKiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled [handmade]Waitohu/māka"23537.3" written on the object 23537.3 (handwritten)Pāohomineral/inorganic materialWhakaahuatanga Ineheight x width 91x16mmRaraunga Ine90mm15mmHuinga KaupapaFishing/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFish HookLine fishingFishing, Trapping & Hunting T&ETools & EquipmentWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
