Red shell neck ornament. This is a pendant that has been cut from the shell of koikoinanti (bivalve shell fish; Gafraum tumidum). It is convex in form and shaped like an almond. The convex surface has been smoothed to show a slightly polished area. Some of the surfaces original furrows still remain from the off-white coloured areas. Opposite, the concave surface shows the remains of the original interior of the shell. The depth of the shell material can be seen from where it has been cut into an almond shape. The convex surface varies from red to a more pale red in contrast to its concave interior. The interior features a transparent white layer where the red shell material can be seen beneath. A circular perforation has been drilled into one end of the almond shaped ornament. A two-ply braid of dark brown human hair has been threaded through the circular perforation to form a neck band. Sometimes te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) might be used. It would be worn around the neck, placed above the bunna (throat ornament of human hair) and worn mostly by men. The koikoinanti can also be referred to as 'the small shell of the spirits' and is regarded a highly valuable possesion.WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē24098.6 (ethnology)240 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ntabo; 1936.295; 24098.6, 240; Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 24098.6; 240Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled plaited [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka24098.6 (handwritten) 240 (label, stick on/label)Pāohoshellhuman hair/hair/animal materialRaraunga Ine290mm15mmHuinga KaupapaAdornment/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
