Shell receptacle. This is a small sea shell. It is of the Charonia Tritonis type. It has a bulbous mid section, with a point at one end and a large aperture on the opposite end. From its point are a series of sutures that form the whorl. A larger whorl makes up the lower part of its form. The aperture of the shell features a forced cavity. Where the lip of the aperture meets towards the end of the shell it furrows in to form a small funnel. Its exterior is made up of a series of small soft and hard ridges. Its is dappled in a dark brown colour with a neutral off-white colour in between. The aperture is off-pink in colour. Te tauu is a receptacle used for containing warmed awa ba (body oil) which is then poured through its funnel into another receptacle such as te binobino (coconut calabash). Its forced cavity provides more room for holding awa ba.WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē24118.7 (ethnology)79 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Tauu; 1936.295; 24118.7, 79; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 24118.7; 79Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga WaihangaBoredWaitohu/māka241118.7; BERU IS.; GILBERT IS.; DEP (handwritten) 79 (label, stick on/label)PāohoshellRaraunga Ine135mm55mmHuinga KaupapaReceptacles/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūContainerDistribution & Transportation ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua27 Jun 2019 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Taki Simutaia, dancing area The University of Auckland Library Taki Simutaia, Eric Putahu and wife dance The University of Auckland Library Taki Simutaia, Ausi, Eping dance in triumph The University of Auckland Library Taki Simutaia, Robin and wife dance as punishment The University of Auckland Library Taki Simutaia, women singers for dancing The University of Auckland Library Mea e whai hononga ai E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
