    Waist ornament of human hair (English)

    Te Nuota. Belt of human hair. The nuota is a waist ornament used as part of the adornment for Kiribati male dancers' costumes. The nuota is made with long lengths of flat braided ira n atu (human hair) and these are all a natural mix of dark brown and black in colour. Benu (coconut husk fibre) of a light brown colour is incorporated into the braids of ira n atu.

    Each braid is approximately 2mm in width and bristly in texture overall as loose ends of invidivual hair strands stray from each braid. Each end of the nuota is knotted securely. This nuota is currently stored as a bundle.
