A dictionary of the New Zealand language to which is added a selection of colloquial sentences

documentary heritage
  • Description

Third edition of a work first published in 1844 and second edition in 1852. The revision was by William Leonard Williams, eldest son of the original author. The grammar is greatly reduced (p. [viii]-xv) and the grouping of words and marking of vowels in the Maori-English section are quite different. The Maori-English section and sentences sections appear to be unchanged.--BiM 768.

Fourth edition was published in 1892 .--BiM 768

The principal feature in this edition of the Maori dictionary, which calls for special notice, is the arrangement of the words. There are certain changes in form which are applicable to a very large proportion of the words in the language and especially to adjectives and verbs. These changes are effected by the reduplication of one or more syllables, by prefixing the causative "whaka", and by the addition of a termination which forms a derivative noun.--Preface to the Third edition
