Borneo and the Indian Archipelago : with drawings of costume and scenery

documentary heritage
  • Kupu whakaahua

Marryat, a midshipman aboard H.M.S. Samarang during the survey cruise to Borneo, the Philippines and the Far East in 1843-46, under the command of Captain Belcher, was the son of the popular Victorian novelist, Frederick Marryat. He was a keen observer and wrote in an attractive popular manner, perhaps under his father's influence. This volume comprises his journal of the voyage and twenty-two full-page coloured lithographs after his sketches.

These sketches are of exceptional quality, and were fully completed by the original artist before being passed on to the engraver. They provided striking visual images of events in Borneo to the British public, and valuable evidence from an eye-witness of such momentous events as the signing by Sultan Omar Ali II of the Treaty ceding Labuan to Britain.
