John Madden : 29 : Pike River

documentary heritage
  • Other Name

29 : Pike River (Alternate title)

  • Description

"One sunny November afternoon in 2010, a devastating explosion shook Pike River's deep underground mine northeast of Greymouth, in the West Coast region of the South Island. Over an hour and a half later, two men emerged from the mine's entrance. Twenty-nine were still unaccounted for. For five days the men's families and friends held out for positive news until a second massive explosion obliterated all hope.

"This body of work speaks both politically and as a reflection of my passion for coal mining; coal is in my blood. I am of the underground and I have undertaken this body of work in an effort to speak the unspoken. I question who is responsible [for the Pike River disaster]. The works I have produced are for the lost men of Pike River mine and for their families; it is a requiem mass in paint."

John Madden, February 2016."--Orexart Gallery website.
