James Maxton: the portrait of a rebel

documentary heritage
  • Kupu whakaahua

"Maxton made friends everywhere. He was in a movement where sacrifice was the everyday lot of its members. Men sacrificed good business positions for the "movement." Members of upper-class and middle-class courted social ostracism by identifying themselves with the Socialist cause. Workmen, in every town and village, found themselves victimised and their one means of livelihood taken from them because of their advocacy of Socialist principles.

Maxton sacrificed his entire leisure time to the movement and was pepared to spend himself to the utmost limits of physical endurance."--Chapter 1.
