In 1949, Prime Minister Peter Fraser held a referendum to allow the New Zealand public to decide on the future of Compulsory Military Training (a form of conscription). The results on August 3rd strongly approved the reintroduction of CMT, with 77.9% in favour from a turnout of 63.5%. Under the Military Training Act 1949, which went into effect in 1950, all males became liable for military service upon reaching 18 years of age. [Source: Wikipedia]
