[That Carleton mentions William Gladstone coming back into office, suggests that this letter was written in 1885 the year before the beginning of Gladstone's second term as Prime minister of England.] Carleton thanks Williams for exchanging pounds on his behalf. Further, he mentions that 'Bell' has sent in his resignation and he discusses whom he is thinking should be appointed as a replacement.

Carleton has forwarded Williams the report on a case regarding profanity and breach of the third commandment [thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain]. He goes on to discuss the Mission Churches of the Church of England and Mission churches of the working men, debating a more casual dress code concerning shirts and bonnets. Carleton writes socially of his niece Mary Carleton's upcoming nuptials - commenting that the 'old folk do not like it on either side...but my experience is, that where the young folk have made up their minds, they get their own way in the end.' Finally, he discusses the upcoming election in England [William Ewart Gladstone], and Carleton makes a passing political comment 'Russia is secure of Constantinople.'

Address; 25 palace Square, Upper Norwood, Surrey. Carleton makes a passing comment about "Russia securing Constantinople", an interesting pre-empt of the Constantinople Agreement made between the allies during the First World War giving Russia what was the Capitol of the Ottoman Empire.
