  • Subject Notes
Emma Volkner (nee Lanfear) was the wife of Carl Sylvius Volkner, a German-born Protestant Missionary. Stationed at Otaki, their presence was unwelcomed, especially during the conflicts between the Government and Kingitanga Maori. In 1864, Emma was removed to Auckland, however, despite warnings her husband remained. In 1865, he was executed by Te Whakatohea who believed him to be a Government Spy.
