Air letter written by Edmund Hillary, British Mount Everest Expedition, Nepal, to his brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, Auckland, New Zealand, dated 14 March [1953]. Writing from outside his tent at 7,500 feet, Hillary states that they've been walking for 5 days but have another 12 to go to get to Thyangboche, where they will establish their base camp for the initial acclimatisation period.

After some brief commentary regarding the trip from Australia to India and their reception there, Hillary mentions that he is quite impressed with both the expedition personnel and the quality of the equipment, such that "I think we've a pretty good chance of knocking the thing off."
