Letter from Edmund Hillary to brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, 8 April [1953]

documentary heritage
  • Description

Air letter written by Edmund Hillary, British Mount Everest Expedition, Nepal, to his brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, Auckland, New Zealand, dated 8 April [1953]. Hillary writes that he is back at Thyangboche after their first acclimatisation trip. He is pleased at how the team has adapted to altitude.

After a brief couple of days convalescing from altitude sickness "I always seem to get this period", Hillary sets off to re-join his party ("by double marching"), who are now at the head of Chola Khola, where he enjoys some high altitude climbs "with plenty of technical work." He states that the next day his party (George Lowe, George Band and Michael Westmacott) are setting off to find a good route up the icefall, and once this is established to then begin transporting the 2.5 tons of expedition equipment and supplies into the Cwm [valley].
