Letter from Marianne Williams to Jane Williams June 12, 1845

documentary heritage
  • Description

A discussion of her families situation amidst the Northern War, including their continued harassment due to Henry Williams involvement. Specifically, the accusations brought against him by Pomare and Kawiti, as well as the Clendon and Wright families [who Marianne describes as '...refugees in this place...'] who were bitter over Henry's attempts to open negotiations for peace.

She reports that Paihia remained standing, while Waimate was under threat of being destroyed by Hone Heke; she shares reports of the battle at Te Ahuahu, and confirms the injuries sustained by both Hone Heke (in the thigh) and Haratua (in the breast). A letter from 'Te Wiremu' to Hone Heke is described by Marianne. She writes that Mr Burrows had been privileged to see it, and that it contained information regarding the movement of Pakeha troops, as well as an advisory that Heke should build three fences around his Pa. Marianne goes on to speak of Henry Williams meeting with the Bishop at Auckland, whereby it was decided that he must visit Kaitaia. She also reports their discussion of other Church Missionary matters, such as the transference of men between stations. She briefly touches of the Governors interests in the Northern War, and shares her knowledge on the movement of the troop ships H.M.S Hazard, Victoria, Velocity, and the British Sovereign; Alongside her discussions of business and war, Marianne writes of her children's recovery from a prolonged typhus-like fever, and of the other missionary wives who remained in Paihia, Waimate, Kaitaia, and Kerikeri such as Mrs James, Mrs Bedgegood, and Mrs Davis.
