Anna Maria Williams (1839-1829), known affectionately as Maria, was the sixth child of William Williams and Jane Nelson. Early in her life she suffered a spinal cord injury, as a result of influenza and typhoid fever, leaving her bedridden. Despite this difficulty, Maria became superintendent of Hukarere Native Girls school founded by her father. She taught English and Scripture, supervised other teachers, and kept the accounts.
