Ronald Vaudrey was born on 23 April 1913 at Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. He served with the 26th Infantry Battalion, 2NZEF, during World War II. He was captured and taken prisoner in Libya on 30 November 1941, eventually ending up in a working camp (Camp 107) in northern Italy. He escaped but was recaptured by the Germans, after having spent three months in the snow-covered high country while trying to rejoin the allied forces to the south in Rome. He was sent to Amsdorf, a working camp in Germany, where he remained until the end of the war. He died on 4 August 1992, at Cambridge, New Zealand, aged 79.
