Edward Earle Vaile was born in London, the son of Samuel Vaile, founder of the Auckland land agency Samuel Vaile & Sons. E. Earle Vaile attained fame and fortune through the development of his estate "Broadlands", a 53,000 acre block of pumice land north of Taupo. On his retirement in 1936, Vaile turned to philanthropic works and was a major benefactor to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
