Gladys Tompkins completed her nursing training at New Plymouth Hospital in 1927 and worked in Wellington, Dunedin and Australia before accepting a position as Health Sister at Batu Pahat in Johore State (Malaysia) in 1939, in which capacity she was serving when the Japanese occupied Malaya and Singapore. After the war she went back to Malaysia as a Health Sister and retired in 1955 after returning to New Zealand, where she settled in Hamilton.
