    Contains photocopied material. Item 1 -- Transcribed shipboard diary [incomplete?] of Joseph Bayes, kept whilst aboard the ship 'Famenoth' during a voyage from Southampton, England, to Auckland, New Zealand, 15 November 1882 - 14 January 1883.

    Also included is a transcribed letter to 'Friends' (presumably back in England) from Joseph Bayes, Auckland, New Zealand, dated 27 March 1883, and an extract taken from the 'New Zealand Herald' (16 January 1883) concerning the arrival of the 'Famenoth'. (typescript; 8 leaves)

    Provenance: The diary and letter (Item 1) appear to have been sent to the donor by Mrs Rachel Gillies, 15 Meachen Terrace, Waiuku, South Auckland. In her letter of provenance, Mrs Cooper (daughter of James Francis Wymer) states that the Wymer family were the original owners of a 100-acre block of land known as 'Sylvia Park'. [Ref.
