A plate for Cynthia Musgrove Smart, born 13 December 1926. BSc, 1948, MSc, 1950 (University of New Zealand). At the time Mervyn Taylor designed this plate, Cynthia Smart was employed by the Crop Research Division, Christchurch. The artist sent several design suggestions and Cynthia chose celmisias as becoming to a botanist. Cynthia married Allan Douglas Shand in 1953 and has lived in Christchurch for many years. She has commented that it was a stroke of good fortune that she retained the capital S when she married. The plate was published on p. 11 of "Ex Libris: New Zealand bookplates 1925-1950", the publication accompanying the exhibition of the same name, organised jointly by Alexander Turnbull Library and the National Library of New Zealand, 1992.
