Ngaliya Barwon Gami (Our Great Uncle)

documentary heritage
  • Kupu whakaahua

Lithograph, printed in yellow, red, blue, and black ink, from four stones; screenprint, printed in grey ink, from one screen on paper. "The print explores the service of Cope’s great great uncle Richard Martin, an Indigenous Australian who served at Gallipoli

and on the Western Front. Martin had enlisted in December 1914 but as an Indigenous Australian and legally unable to

enlist at this time, he declared that he was a New Zealander with five years’ prior service in the Light Horse. In fact, he was

born on Stradbroke Island, Queensland and had no known previous service. Cope has transcribed a family image of Martin

in his uniform and placed it over a military map in the Memorial’s collection from the Battle of Dernancourt where he died

on 28 March 1918. Cope often works with military maps and was interested in the way armies assign foreign places

familiar names from their home countries, as did colonisers to Aboriginal lands." - Australian War Memorial

  • Artist's bio:
"Megan Cope is a core member of the Brisbane-based Aboriginal Collective proppaNOW, and has a diverse practice that
engages with issues of identity, colonisation, the environment and map making. A descendant from the Quandamooka
region (North Stradbroke Island), Cope’s recent work focuses on the toponymy (the study of place names) and
geomorphology (the study of the nature and history of landforms) of heavily populated tourist destinations along the east
coast of Australia. Her work has been included in both national and international exhibitions, including the ARC Biennial in
Brisbane (2009), Lie of the Land: New Australian Landscapes, Embassy of Australia, Washington DC (2012), and Insurgence:
proppaNOW, Museum of Australian Democracy, Canberra (2013). In 2012 Cope was commissioned to create a major sitespecific
work for GOMA, Brisbane." - Australian War Memorial
