Survivor's Roll of Honour

documentary heritage
  • Kupu whakaahua

Screenprint, printed in grey ink, from one screen (20 screens used across edition) on paper. "The prints are commissioned as an edition of twenty. In the case of Fiona Jack’s print, each is a unique screenprint. Stretching across a white expanse of twenty sheets is a survivor’s roll of honour. When thinking about her family war stories she realised ‘there was one thing common to my entire extended family.... everyone survived’.

Jack was conscious that while ‘they hadn't made the "ultimate sacrifice" their experience was beyond anything [she] could imagine and yet none of them were on any national roll of honour for their lifelong sacrifice.’ While it may appear to be a simple list, this singularly exhaustive roll was painstakingly compiled in collaboration with historian Phil Lascelles. It ‘is the first and most complete list of [New Zealand] survivors to date’, consisting of 108920 names." - Australian War Memorial
