Locally common shrub to 2 m in full sun at the edges and top of steep rock bluffs forming an ecotone between scattered herbs on the bluffs (eg. Ageratina riparia, Echinopogon ovatus) and low 6m forest dominated by Pseudopanax gilliesii with Olearia rani and Brachyglottis repanda. With stunted Griselinia lucida.
